Charles Harbutt foi um fotógrafo americano que enquanto estudava jornalismo na universidade, frequentou diversos workshops de fotografia. Ainda enquanto caloiro produziu um documentário sobre uma família de imigrantes refugiados da Europa, que demorou cerca de uma semana a realizar, acompanhando, em pormenor, a sua chegada ao continente americano, a longa viagem de comboio e a chegada à sua nova casa. Harbutt vendeu assim a sua primeira história fotográfica, à revista católica Jubilee. Terminou o curso numa altura em que as revistas de fotografia, como a Life, estavam no seu auge e começou a trabalhar para a Jubilee como fotógrafo e jornalista.
Pouco tempo depois foi convidado por um grupo internacional de escritores e artistas para documentar a revolução cubana em 1959. A sua determinação levou-o a iniciar-se como freelancer, desprendendo-se das obrigações editoriais e podendo assim fotografar livremente os guetos hispânicos em Nova Iorque ou a viagem de Jacqueline Kenedy ao Paquistão, conseguido publicar nas mais prestigiadas revistas, como a Life, Look, Paris Match, Stern, Epoca e a Newsweek.
Em 1963 começa a trabalhar para a agência Magnum, onde permaneceu até 1981.
Charles Harbutt was an American photographer who studied journalism at university, while attending several photography workshops. While still a freshman, he produced a documentary about a family of refugee immigrants from Europe, which took about a week to make, following in detail their arrival on the American continent, the long train journey and the arrival at their new home. Harbutt thus sold his first photographic story to the Catholic magazine Jubilee. He finished the course at a time when photography magazines such as Life were at their peak and began working for Jubilee as a photographer and journalist.
Shortly after, he was invited by an international group of writers and artists to document the Cuban revolution in 1959. His determination led him to start as a freelancer, freeing himself from editorial obligations and thus being able to freely photograph the Hispanic ghettos in New York or Jacqueline Kenedy’s trip to Pakistan, managed to publish in the most prestigious magazines, such as Life, Look, Paris Match, Stern, Epoca and Newsweek.
In 1963, he started working for the Magnum agency, where he remained until 1981.
