Clarissa Sligh (1939-) é uma artista e fotógrafa afro-americana. Formou-se em Matemática, Gestão e Artes Visuais. Começou por trabalhar para a NASA num programa de voo espacial tripulado, depois exerceu funções no setor financeiro em Nova Iorque e na década de 1980 iniciou a carreira no domínio das artes visuais. Clarissa Sligh trabalha com texto, fotografia, livros de artista e instalações. Combina a fotografia e texto e cria poderosas obras de arte narrativas onde explora temas como a raça, a memória, a identidade, a justiça social, a transformação e a perceção. Os primeiros trabalhos de Clarissa Sligh ganharam reconhecimento como uma artista que explorou com firmeza ideias que muitas vezes desafiavam os valores tradicionais.

As suas obras foram expostas no Museu de Arte Moderna (MOMA) e no Museu Judaico em Nova Iorque, no Walker Art Center em Minneapolis (Minnesota) e no Museu Nacional de História e Cultura Afro-americana em Washington, DC. Em 1988, tornou-se co-fundadora do “Coast to Coast National Women Artists of Color Projects”, um projeto que se concentrava na promoção de obras de arte realizadas por mulheres artistas afro-americanas.

Clarissa Sligh (1939-) is an African American artist and photographer. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Business Management and a master’s degree in Visual Arts. She first worked at NASA on the manned space flight program, then worked in the financial sector in New York, and embarked on her career in visual arts in the 1980s. Clarissa Sligh works with text, photography, artist’s books and installations. She combines photography and text to create powerful narrative artworks in which she explores race, memory, identity, social justice, transmutation and perception. The early work of Clarissa Sligh gained her recognition as an artist who persistently explored ideas that often challenged traditional values.

Her works have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and the Jewish Museum, in New York City, the Walker Art Center, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, in Washington, D.C. In 1988, she co-founded Coast to Coast National Women Artists of Color Project, which focused on promoting artwork by African American women.
