Helena Almeida é considerada uma das artistas plásticas mais determinantes da segunda metade do século XX português, tendo criado uma obra que atravessa fronteiras disciplinares e questiona as relações entre o corpo, a obra, o espaço.

Foi nos anos 70 que começou a transpor para as suas obras o desejo de autorrepresentação: uma reflexão sobre si própria onde o seu rosto e corpo ganham relevo ao mesmo tempo que a fotografia se torna o elemento que une o mental e o visual numa representação de movimento e cor que tanto apelam aos sentidos como exigem ao espectador uma perceção da natureza do meio em que a obra se exprime.

A necessidade de se ver, ela própria, uma obra de arte é muito mais do que uma representação plasmada numa superfície; é uma linguagem nova que convida a um prolongamento da extensão do corpo e que se alonga no tempo refletindo-se numa nova dimensão de espaço.

Toda esta noção de amplitude, composta pelo acesso ao chão e ao teto, mas também às paredes, encurta as distâncias entre o interior do exterior.

Helena Almeida is considered one of the most significant visual artists of the second half of the Portuguese twentieth century, having created a work that crosses disciplinary boundaries and questions the relationships between body, work and space.

It was in the 70s that she began to put self-representation into her works: a reflection on herself where her face and body are highlighted at the same time that photography becomes the element that unites the mental and the visual in a representation of movement and color. Both appeal to sensory dimensions and demand from the viewer a perception of the nature of the atmosphere in which the work is expressed.

The need to see herself as a work of art is much more than a representation shaped on a surface; it is a new language that invites the viewer to a prolongation of the extension of the body, reflecting itself in a new dimension of space.

This whole notion of spaciousness, made up of access to the floor and ceiling, but also to the walls, shortens the distances between the interior and exterior.
