Margaret Bourke-White was the first known female  war correspondent and the first woman to be allowed to work in combat zones during World War II.

As the war progressed, she was attached to the U.S. Army Air Force in North Africa, then to the U.S. Army in Italy and later in Germany.

In 1943, Bourke-White recorded the war in Italy from the ground. Although she had survived torpedo and artillery attacks, she claimed she was never as frightened as she was on the front in Italy.

After the war, she produced a book entitled Dear Fatherland, Rest Quietly, a project that helped her come to grips with the brutality she had witnessed during and after the war.

In this this photograph  there is a soldier sitting on the board of a Bailey bridge. The “Bailey bridge” is a type of portable bridge developed by the British during World War II for military use. The bridge is known as “delirium tremens”.
