O fotógrafo e fotojornalista americano Steve McCurry estudou cinematografia pela Pennsylvania State University (1974) antes de trabalhar para um jornal local. Dois anos depois fez a primeira de muitas viagens à Índia como fotógrafo freelancer onde aprendeu a observar e a esperar pelo tempo certo para o registo fotográfico. Vários meses depois e pouco tempo antes da invasão russa, conseguiu com muitos riscos atravessar a fronteira (fechada a todos os jornalistas ocidentais) entre o Paquistão e o Afeganistão e tornou-se responsável por mostrar ao mundo as primeiras imagens do conflito no Afeganistão.

Desde então, especializou-se em fotografar retratos de pessoas em áreas de conflito civis e internacionais. Em 1984, regressou ao Afeganistão e fez uma série de fotografias num campo de refugiados de Nasir Bagh, no Paquistão, sendo o responsável pelo registo da célebre fotografia da menina afegã Sharbat Gula (1984) que se tornou capa da National Geographic em junho de 1985.

American photographer and photojournalist Steve McCurry studied cinematography at Pennsylvania State University (1974) before working for a local newspaper. Two years later he made the first of many trips to India as a freelance photographer where he learned to observe and wait for the right time to take a picture. Several months later, and shortly before the Russian invasion, he managed at great risk to cross the border (closed to all western journalists) between Pakistan and Afghanistan and became responsible for showing the world the first images of the conflict in Afghanistan.

Since then, he has specialised in photographing portraits of people in civil and international conflict areas. In 1984, he returned to Afghanistan and made a series of photographs in a refugee camp in Nasir Bagh, Pakistan, being responsible for the famous photograph of the Afghan girl Sharbat Gula (1984), which became the cover of National Geographic in June 1985.

By means of emotionally charged photographs, Steve McCurry displays the effects of war on people and places. His universal photographs address cultures and ethnicities, ancient traditions and contemporary societies, always captured with great expressive power and naturalness.

A master of visual storytelling, Steve McCurry became a member of the prestigious Magnum Photos agency in 1986. He has won the ‘Robert Capa Gold Medal’, the ‘National Press Photographers Award’ and four ‘World Press Photo’ awards.
