Koos Breukel (Haia, Holanda, 1962) estudou na Academia Real de Belas Artes de Haia entre 1982 e 1986. Começou a trabalhar como fotógrafo freelancer em Amesterdão e especializou-se em fotografia de retrato. O seu trabalho fotográfico foi amplamente publicado em revistas e considerado um dos melhores exemplos de fotografia de retrato contemporâneo da Holanda. Koos Breukel fez as primeiras fotos oficiais dos reis da Holanda, rei Willem-Alexander e rainha Máxima, publicadas em abril de 2013.

Desde o nascimento e alegria à doença e morte, o fotógrafo regista as diferentes fases da vida humana através de retratos de recém-nascidos, crianças, adolescentes, adultos e idosos. As fotografias transmitem a emoção dos momentos mais fortes da vida de cada retratado e conta a história da pessoa que está a ser fotografada. A grande diferença entre outros fotógrafos de retratos e Koos Breukel é que fotografa pessoas porque quer saber se sofreram algum tipo de lesão em consequência de contratempos que tiveram durante a sua vida e se conseguiram lidar com essas adversidades. O resultado são retratos sem superficialidade e preconceitos mas com respeito e dignidade pela condição humana.

Koos Breukel (The Hague, Netherlands, 1962) studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague from 1982 to 1986. He started working as a freelance photographer in Amsterdam and specialised in portrait photography. His photographic work has been widely published in magazines and is considered one of the finest examples of contemporary portrait photography in the Netherlands. Koos Breukel took the first official photos of the Dutch kings, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima, which were published in April 2013.

The cycle of life is a recurring theme in his photographic records. From birth and joy to illness and death, the photographer captures the different stages of human life through portraits of newborns, children, teenagers, adults, and the elderly. The photographs convey the emotion of the strongest moments in each subject’s life and tell the story of the person being photographed. The major difference between Koos Breukel and other portrait photographers is that he photographs people because he wants to know if they have suffered any kind of injury as a result of setbacks they have experienced in their lives and how they have dealt with those adversities. The result is portraits that are devoid of superficiality and prejudices but filled with respect and dignity for the human condition.
