Festas d’Arrábida – A Bordo do D. Amélia

Os navios Amélia I, II, III e IV foram sucessivamente adquiridos pelo rei D. Carlos I para assegurar o seu vasto programa de investigação oceanográfica, um domínio ao qual o monarca dedicou grande empenho e que o destacou no panorama científico internacional. As campanhas realizadas a bordo dos Amélias permitiram recolher dados pioneiros sobre correntes, fundos marinhos e biodiversidade, revelando o profundo interesse de D. Carlos pelo conhecimento do oceano.
Após a implantação da República, em 5 de outubro de 1910, coube ao Amélia IV desempenhar um derradeiro papel histórico: foi nele que D. Manuel II, último rei de Portugal, deixou o país rumo ao exílio (Brasil).
The ships Amélia I, II, III, and IV were successively acquired by King D. Carlos I to carry out his extensive program of oceanographic research, a field to which the monarch devoted great effort, and which distinguished him on the international scientific stage. The campaigns conducted aboard the Amélias allowed for the collection of pioneering data on currents, seabeds, and biodiversity, reflecting D. Carlos’s profound interest in the knowledge of the ocean. After the establishment of the Republic on October 5, 1910, the Amélia IV played a final historical role: it was aboard this ship that D. Manuel II, the last king of Portugal, left the country for exile (Brazil).
