Jornalista, deputado e notável orador político português, José Estevão nasceu em Aveiro a 26 de novembro de 1809, sendo uma das figuras mais marcantes do liberalismo português da primeira geração romântica.
Destacou-se como pioneiro da oratória política romântica em Portugal, reconhecido pela eloquência e pela defesa apaixonada das ideias liberais.
Enquanto estudante de Direito em Coimbra, aderiu aos ideais da Revolução Liberal de 1820. Participou nas lutas civis entre liberais e absolutistas, exilando-se em Inglaterra após o golpe de D. Miguel, em 1828. Regressou para integrar as forças liberais de D. Pedro, participando no desembarque do Pampelido e no cerco da cidade do Porto. A partir de 1837 exerceu funções como deputado, afirmando-se como líder da ala setembrista e mantendo presença ativa em várias legislaturas. Paralelamente, desenvolveu intensa atividade jornalística, fundando em 1838 o jornal O Tempo e, em 1840, A Revolução de Setembro, importante órgão de expressão política do movimento setembrista.
Journalist, member of parliament, and distinguished Portuguese political orator, José Estevão was born in Aveiro on 26 November 1809 and became one of the most promi-nent figures of Portuguese liberalism within the first Romantic generation. He stood out as a pioneer of Romantic political oratory in Portugal, renowned for his eloquence and passionate defence of liberal ideals.
While studying Law in Coimbra, he embraced the principles of the Liberal Revolution of 1820. He took part in the civil conflicts between liberals and absolutists and went into exile in England after the coup of King Miguel in 1828. He later returned to join the lib-eral forces of Dom Pedro, participating in the Landing at Pampelido and in the siege of the city of Porto.
From 1837 onwards, he served as a member of parliament, establishing himself as a leader of the Setembrist faction and maintaining an active presence in several legisla-tures. Alongside his political career, he pursued intense journalistic activity, founding the newspaper O Tempo in 1838 and, in 1840, A Revolução de Setembro, an important political voice of the Setembrist movement.
