Ao longo da história da fotografia, surgiram equipamentos interessantes concebidos para se disfarçarem de livros – exemplos notáveis são a Optimus Book Camera, produzida em 1886 pela inglesa Perken Son & Rayment; a Dr. Krügener Taschenbuch, patenteada em 1888 pelo Dr. Rudolf Krügener; ou a alemã Reporter, lançada pela C. P. Goerz em 1889.
Seguindo essa tradição de engenho e dissimulação, surge na década de 1970 esta singular câmara fotográfica de fabrico chinês que, à primeira vista, poderia facilmente passar por um simples dicionário de bolso. Equipada com uma objetiva de menisco de foco fixo e um obturador de velocidade única, utilizava filme 110, permitindo captar discretas imagens de 13×14 mm.
Mais do que uma curiosidade técnica, esta peça ilustra o fascínio duradouro pela fotografia secreta e pelos dispositivos camuflados. Hoje, integra o núcleo de câmaras de espionagem da Coleção António Pedro Vicente, preservada no Centro Português de Fotografia, testemunhando o engenho e a criatividade que marcaram a história da miniaturização fotográfica.
Throughout the history of photography, intriguing devices were created to disguise themselves as books — notable examples include the Optimus Book Camera, produced in 1886 by the English firm Perken Son & Rayment; the Dr. Krügener Taschenbuch, patented in 1888 by Dr. Rudolf Krügener; and the German Reporter, launched by C. P. Goerz in 1889.
Following this tradition of ingenuity and disguise, this distinctive Chinese-made camera emerged in the 1970s, which at first glance could easily be mistaken for a simple pocket dictionary. Equipped with a fixed-focus meniscus lens and a single-speed shutter, it used 110 film, allowing the capture of discreet 13×14 mm images.
More than a technical curiosity, this piece reflects the enduring fascination with secret photography and concealed devices. Today, it forms part of the spy camera section of the António Pedro Vicente Collection, preserved at the Portuguese Centre of Photography, bearing witness to the ingenuity and creativity that shaped the history of photographic miniaturization.
