Did you know that photography was used as a research tool to contextualise sculpted busts within Republican propaganda?
The work “The Busts of the First Republic”, by historian António Pedro Vicente (1938–2024), is an important contribution to the study of cultural memory and Portugal’s sculptural heritage in the early twentieth century. Through iconographic analysis and a substantial set of images, the author compiles and contextualises busts associated with the Republican period, highlighting their role in the symbolic affirmation of the new regime.
With the Proclamation of the Republic in 1910, it became necessary to replace monarchical symbolism with emblems that expressed Liberty, Homeland, and Citizenship. Among these symbols, the female allegory of the Republic stood out, inspired by classical and European models. Depicted wearing the Phrygian cap, the female figure became a recognisable personification of Republican values. Busts of the Republic, placed in schools and public buildings, consolidated this image and marked a clear break with the monarchical past.
The photographs included in the work make it possible to observe the formal and stylistic details of these sculptures, preserving little-studied pieces and underscoring the role of art in the symbolic construction of the Portuguese Republic.
