Andrew Ross (1798-1859) que, desde muito cedo enveredou pelo mundo da ótica, criou o seu próprio negócio em 1830, a Andrew Ross & Co. Relacionou-se desde muito cedo com os grandes nomes pioneiros da fotografia, entre eles o inglês Fox Talbot (1800-1877), de quem era fornecedor e o optometrista francês Alphonse Giroux (1775-1848), que produzia as câmaras daguerreotípicas de Louis Daguerre (1787-1851).
Após o falecimento de Ross, o seu filho Thomas (1818-1870), preparado durante toda a sua vida para suceder ao pai, assumiu o negócio, que adotou sequencialmente os nomes Thomas Ross & Co., Ross & Co e Ross & Ltd.
Na segunda metade do século XX associou-se à, também inglesa, Houghton -Butcher, deixando totalmente de produzir em 1975.
Andrew Ross (1798-1859), who very early on became involved in the world of optics, created his own business in 1830, Andrew Ross & Co. He had an early relationship with the great pioneers of photography, including the English photographer Fox Talbot (1800-1877), for whom he was a supplier, and the French optometrist Alphonse Giroux (1775-1848), who produced Louis Daguerre’s daguerreotype cameras (1787-1851).
After Ross’s death, his son Thomas (1818-1870), groomed throughout his life to succeed his father, took over the business, which sequentially adopted the names Thomas Ross & Co., Ross & Co, and Ross & Ltd.
In the second half of the 20th century, it became associated with Houghton-Butcher, also in England, and ceased production entirely in 1975.
