José M. Rodrigues nasceu em Lisboa, em 1951, mas foi em Évora que cresceu e onde encontrou pela primeira vez a paixão pela luz e pela sombra.

Partiu depois para Paris onde diz ter sido educado nas salas de cinema «no escuro, como uma espécie de câmara escura», experiência que viria a utilizar no futuro.

A Holanda foi a paragem que se lhe seguiu, «por simples coincidência». Aí foi cofundador da Perspektief, uma Associação de Artes, onde tomou consciência que era fotógrafo. Então a «imagem passou a ser infinita».

Nesta fotografia captada no Dia da Rainha em 2003 – um feriado nacional dos Países Baixos – José Manuel Rodrigues revela a ambiguidade dramática que torna o seu trabalho, por vezes abstrato, tão inconfundível, onde também as figuras surgem no espaço para perturbarem.

He then left for Paris where he says he was educated in movie theaters “in the dark, like a kind of camera obscura”, an experience that he would use in the future.

Holland was the next stop, “by simple coincidence”. There he co-founded Perspektief, an Arts Association, where he became aware that he was a photographer. Then the «image became infinite».

In this photograph taken on Queen’s Day in 2003 – a national holiday in the Netherlands – José Manuel Rodrigues reveals the dramatic ambiguity that makes his work, sometimes abstract, so unmistakable, where figures also appear in space to disturb.
