À primeira vista, parece que estamos perante um banal relógio de pulso, porém a sua verdadeira função revela-se surpreendente: trata-se de uma câmara fotográfica em miniatura, concebida para ser utilizada de forma discreta.
Distribuído pela P3 – Personal Protection Products (UK) e pela PK Electronics (Alemanha), este é um exemplo claro do fascínio da década de 1980 por dispositivos de espionagem acessíveis ao público.
Equipado com uma objetiva f:2,8-5,63 mm e um obturador com três velocidades (1/30, 1/60 e 1/120 s), utilizava um invulgar suporte sensível: um pequeníssimo disco de sete exposições em emulsão de alta sensibilidade ASA 400/DIN 27. Este sistema, de curta autonomia, refletia a procura por soluções compactas, sacrificando a quantidade de registos em prol da portabilidade.
Mais do que um simples gadget, esta câmara ilustra a popularização da cultura da espionagem, fortemente influenciada pelo cinema e pela televisão da época. Hoje, constitui uma peça rara que alia design utilitário a uma irresistível aura de mistério e vigilância. Preservada no Centro Português de Fotografia, integra o núcleo de câmaras de espionagem da Coleção António Pedro Vicente, refletindo o engenho técnico e o imaginário cultural que aproximaram a fotografia do universo da espionagem.
At first glance, it seems to be nothing more than an ordinary wristwatch. However, its true function is quite surprising: it is, in fact, a miniature camera designed for discreet use.
Distributed by P3 – Personal Protection Products (UK) and PK Electronics (Germany), this is a clear example of the 1980s fascination with espionage devices made accessible to the public.
Equipped with an f:2.8/5.63 mm lens and a shutter offering three speeds (1/30, 1/60 and 1/120 s), it used an unusual photosensitive support: a tiny seven-exposure disk with ASA 400/DIN 27 high-speed emulsion. This short-capacity system reflected the quest for compact solutions, sacrificing the number of exposures in favor of portability.
More than just a simple gadget, this camera illustrates the popularization of espionage culture, strongly influenced by the cinema and television of its time. Today, it stands as a rare piece that combines utilitarian design with an irresistible aura of mystery and surveillance.
Preserved at the Portuguese Centre of Photography, it forms part of the spy camera sub-collection within the António Pedro Vicente Collection, reflecting the technical ingenuity and cultural imagination that brought photography closer to the world of espionage.
