Erich Lessing nasceu em Viena a 13 de julho de 1923. Em 1939, com a ocupação da Áustria por Hitler, é obrigado a emigrar para Israel onde estudou engenharia de rádio no Instituto Israelita de Tecnologia. Trabalhou em vários Kibbuzim (coletividades comunitárias israelitas), foi motorista de táxi e posteriormente incorporou o exército britânico como fotógrafo e piloto.
Após a Segunda Guerra Mundial, em 1947, Erich Lessing regressou à Áustria e começou a trabalhar como fotojornalista para a agência de notícias americana Associated Press. Em 1951, ingressou na agência fotográfica Magnum fundada pelo fotógrafo húngaro Robert Capa (1913-1954) e pelo fotojornalista polaco David Seymour (1911-1956) onde ganhou notoriedade pelos retratos fotográficos aos líderes mundiais.
Erich Lessing colaborou com muitas revistas internacionais, incluindo Heute, Quick, Life, Paris Match, Epoca, Picture Post através de icónicos registos fotográficos sobre os acontecimentos políticos e sociais da Europa do pós-guerra.

A partir de 1960, Erich Lessing especializou-se em fotografia colorida de grande formato e centrou-se no ensino da fotografia e na documentação histórico-artística, nomeadamente em registos fotográficos de obras de arte em museus. Tornou-se membro do Conselho Internacional de Museus (UNESCO – ICOM) e do Comité Internacional para a Documentação do ICOM (divisão de informação). Durante a sua carreira, Erich Lessing recebeu muitos prémios, homenagens e reconhecimento.

Erich Lessing was born in Vienna on 13 July, 1923. In 1939, following the occupation of Austria by Hitler, he was forced to emigrate to Israel where he studied radio engineering at the Israeli Institute of Technology. He worked in various Kibbuzim (Israeli community collectives), was a taxi driver, and later joined the British army as a photographer and pilot.
After the Second World War, in 1947, Erich Lessing returned to Austria and started working as a photojournalist for the American news agency Associated Press. In 1951, he joined the Magnum photo agency founded by Hungarian photographer Robert Capa (1913-1954) and Polish photojournalist David Seymour (1911-1956) where he gained notoriety for his photographic portraits of world leaders.
Erich Lessing collaborated with many international magazines, including Heute, Quick, Life, Paris Match, Epoca, Picture Post through iconic photographic records focused on political and social events of post-war Europe.

From 1960 onwards, Erich Lessing specialised in large format colour photography and focused on teaching photography and on artistic-historical documentation, namely photographic records of works of art in museums. He became a member of the International Council of Museums (UNESCO – ICOM) and of the International Committee for Documentation of ICOM (information division). Throughout his career, Erich Lessing received many awards, honours, and recognitions.
