Em 1906, August Sander realiza em Linz, onde possui um estúdio, a sua primeira exposição individual, com cerca de cem fotografias. Depois de vender este estúdio, muda-se para Lindenthall, perto de Colónia, e começa a trabalhar naquele que se tornaria o projeto da sua vida, “Man in the Twentieth Century”, um trabalho contínuo que visava documentar o povo alemão.
O livro “Antlitz der Zeit” , publicado por Sander em 1929, reúne 60 retratos da série “Man in the Twentieth Century”. Os arquétipos lá dispostos chamaram a atenção dos nazis de forma negativa; acreditavam que a diversidade humana nele mostrada ia contra os ideais arianos.
No início dos anos 30, a ascensão de Hitler ao poder começa a afetar negativamente o seu trabalho. Com a prisão do seu filho por pertencer a um movimento antinazi, as autoridades suspendem a publicação dos livros de Sander e confiscam os negativos do projeto “Man in the Twentieth Century”.
Sander deixou de documentar pessoas e concentrou-se na fotografia de arquitetura, natureza e paisagem.
In 1906, August Sander held his first individual exhibition in Linz ( where he had a studio) with around one hundred photographs. After selling this studio, he moved to Lindenthall, near Cologne, and began working on what would become his life’s project, “Man in the Twentieth Century”, an ongoing work to document the German people.
The book “Antlitz der Zeit”, published by Sander in 1929, brings together 60 portraits from the series “Man in the Twentieth Century”. The archetypes displayed there drew the attention of the Nazis in a negative way; they believed that the human diversity shown in it were against Aryan ideals.
In the early 1930s, Hitler’s accession began to influence his work negatively . With the arrest of his son for belonging to an anti-Nazi movement, the authorities suspended the publication of Sander’s books and confiscated the negatives of the “Man in the Twentieth Century” project.
Sander stopped documenting people and focused on architecture, nature and landscape.
